10 musicians pay tribute to Guru Nanak on 550th birth anniversary

10 musicians pay tribute to Guru Nanak on 550th birth anniversaryWhen it’s for a good cause, musicians are known to come together, and this time, 10 popular singers and composers have collaborated to pay tribute to Guru Nanak Dev on his 550th birth anniversary.

Shankar Mahadevan, Salim Merchant, Shekhar Ravjianii, Shaan, Neeti Mohan, Jaspinder Narula, Richa Sharma, Kapil Sharma and Sukhshinder Shinda have sung a shabadh along with composer-singer Harshdeep Kaur. “My aim was to compose something celebratory. I added aalaaps, adlibs and harmonies, so that each artiste gets to sing in their best style,” shares Harshdeep.

Singer Shaan, who feels that he has always had a strong connect with Guru Nanak, says, “The divine shabadh is simple yet powerful, and celebrates the great Guru.”

Shekhar, interestingly, has had a special bond with gurudwaras and he feels privileged to be a part of this song. “In the last few years, I’ve celebrated my birthday in the gurudwara where my family organised langar and we’ve done seva. I go there every week as I feel a sense of calm,” he shares.

Every singer, who is a part of this project, has felt a divine connect and that is what makes this one special. Salim believes that this song celebrates bhakti. His first visit to the Golden Temple had meant a lot.

He shares, “I’d felt like I was a Sikh in my previous birth, there was a divine power that told me that I’d been to the Golden Temple before. I felt a past life connection.

This song meant a lot.” Shankar feels that being a part of a project like this is great and says, “There are very few moments in life, when you feel your hard work and passion is finally justified.”

Stand-up-comic Kapil Sharma has a special reason to be a part of this tribute. He says, “I consider Harshdeep as my younger sister and I’m humbled that I could pay a tribute through this religious song.”
