Singers celebrated Gurpurab with fervour

Celebrity singers Daler Mehndi, Badshah and Gurdas Mann share what they did on Gurpurab. Here is what they had to say...

Daler Mehndi:

On Gurpurab morning I was a part of one of the biggest Prabhat Pheris (they created a record of being the largest get together of devotees). I began singing shabadh kirtans at 4 am as the procession in Bilaspur, Chhatisgarh of three lakh people walked along. It was the most humbling experience as I got to sing praises of Guru Nanak Dev ji for such a massive congregation of love-filled souls till 8 in the morning. It was a brilliant experience and I feel all my prayers were answered.

There were new born babies, and elderly people walking along in the Prabhat Pheri. On the opening day of the Kartarpur Corridor a couple of days ago, along with a few other singers, I got to sing praises for Guru Nanak Dev Ji with ‘Dar Khul Gaya Babe Nanak Da’. We Sikhs have a chhor or chadar that is placed over the Siri Guru Granth Saheb in Guru Dwaras. And I am humbled that our 24 carat gold chhor studded with emeralds and rubies has reached Kartarpur Sahib this week.

Gurdas Maan

I visited the gurudwara in the morning and for me, celebrating Nanak Dev ji’s birthday is about following his teachings and reciting his baani. The greatest gift we can give is to ponder over his teachings of peace, joy and happiness in the world. Let this day be a reminder for all of us to wish the best for everyone, irrespective of religion race or colour. That’s what Guru Nanak taught us — ‘Nanak naam chardi kala tere bhane sarbat da bhala’.
